Creature Comforts

One of the most important life lessons – the power of unconditional love – repeatedly shows up living with three four-legged furries. In December, four comforting years of constant companionship with Momo almost ended after she was hit by a car. Her love for me kept her fighting through her surgery, through two lonely weeks of recovery, and kept her alive. Now she appears so healthy, except for the gimp, that she is living proof of a simple and rich source of love. I am grateful Momo is still here to curl up with. She reminds me that the more naps I take, the more awakenings I can experience.

I can not convey in words the emotional bond that has grown between me and my puplers. Nonetheless, I am adored by them and they love me unconditionally. My parental shortcomings do not bother them as long as I delight in their presence when I am around. I spent this weekend pampering, playing, and doting on the puplers, and they returned the kind of devotion that I often dream about receiving from human beings. I spent time laughing at their antics: Buksi eating tomatoes; Buksi swimming to me for hugs at the lake; Ember snuggling with Maya on the bed; and Ember refusing to obey and get in the car after our walk. Observing their antics teaches me how to live: eat well, be loyal, make friends easily, and play more. I am blessed by these three furry Zen masters as they teach me the paradox of undoing in a hectic world where work and chores must get done.
