Douglas Dam, 15 miles downstream, was erected on the French Broad River in 1943. This image shows the Dandridge Dike, and the swelling water of the French Broad in March 1944. The top of the Dam's flood gates are 1002' elevation; the elevation of downtown Dandridge is 982'. As it does today, the Dike kept water from flooding the historic district of Dandridge.
