On the front page of the KNS this morning is a photo essay of the 10,000 acre Rocky Fork watershed in East TN. This is an area surrounded almost completely by other protected land, mostly managed by the Forest Service, including wilderness. The AT parallels the tract, notably where my friends and I hiked this past New Years Day. There are vistas of Big Bald Mountain, and the mountains of western North Carolina. The tract is home to the largest black bear reserve in TN, blue ribbon trout streams, rare salamanders, and even rarer hellbenders. This tract has been in private ownership, under a lease to the TN Wildlife Resource Agency for low-impact recreation, until recently. It is now for sale. Many conservation groups are working together to buy the 10,000 acres to leave a legacy for future generations. It is expected to cost $39 million of public and private monies.
